I've been there a few times. :) I usually manage to pay off anything I've put on the credit card within a couple of months unless something unexpected comes up - like taking the kid to the ER... (or me and my upcoming visits to the doc. Even with health insurance, I'm anticipating a big bill for that MRI. Ugh.)

I do charge big things - like plane tickets, hotels, weddings... So I got the wedding paid off, then I got Jeff's ER billed paid off. I was nearly down to $0 until I put down deposits for England. In August 2008 we were up to our eyeballs in debt and knew if we were going to be able to send 3 kids to college we were going to have to get very focused.

It wasn't easy, but it was sooo worth it. We've been debt-free including the mortage and cars since August 2012.

We don't feel any richer since the money that was going to pay off the debts is now going to pay for the kid's college. But we haven't had to borrow to get them through.

We've managed to stay completely debt free. Hopefully, 3-4 years from now when all the kids are financially independent (and we've made it clear to them they WILL be financially independent), mom and dad can finally go on a real vacation.

Again, congratulations!
